Nicola Sturgeon reveals Scottish Nationalist MPs will not vote for British air strikes in Syria ~ DAILY RECORD, 24 NOV 2015.

NICOLA Sturgeon has said she is “not convinced” by the case for air strikes in Syria.

Scotland’s First Minister and SNP leader said her party would vote against the action if there was a House of Commons vote.

Proposals for extending military action are due to be outlined by UK Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday, with the issue expected to be put to a vote in the Commons next week.

Speaking after giving the annual Jimmy Reid Memorial Lecture at Glasgow University, Sturgeon said: “I have said we’ll listen because I think it’s incumbent in the time we live in to not close your ears and be responsible and be prepared to listen, but there are some tests that need to be passed.

“It is not good enough in a situation like this to say we’ve got to do something – we all want to do something, but we can’t just do anything.

“It has got to be action that is right, that will make a positive difference, rather than make the situation worse.”

Sturgeon said there were “tests” over legalities, ethics and desired outcomes.

“There is no shortage of countries bombing Syria , what there is a shortage of is people trying to get a ceasefire on the ground amongst the non-Daesh combatants and unify in the action against them.”

She added: “We can’t just do something for the sake of it if it runs the risk of making things worse.”
